Collaborative Poetry in Real Time – Digital Literacy at Yorkdale

Poetry Technology in the 21st Century

Digital Literacy: space and time,
Come together in this practice rhyme,
How to use them, when to click,
Where to go, it makes me sick…
So many internet sites
I’m going to lose my mind
im fresh check out my nike flights
i need more than 3 terabytes
i love base god
BURRR
when are we going to make are business card
Education is the key of life.
they say these are the times of our lives,
hate to break it to you, they lied.
dont want to be in high school forever
i want to move on to something better
In this computer class
Try to do this work so that I will pass
…nice segue
We forget the books and think its easy
but you know life just ain’t that breezyy
When it comes down to it, you need your books..
’cause you won’t get anywhere with only your looks.
Trying not to fall asleep
If I do it will be deep.
trying to work hard in class

Yorkdale Drama Students reach ‘New Heights’

Grade 11 Drama students took an awesome trip on February 15th to Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts. Students were treated to a toe-tapping, hip-swaying, dancing in the aisles performance of In The Heights.

The Heights Musical Logo

The show, which blended latin music, hip hop, salsa and merengue, told the story of a group of Latin immigrants in America as they try to carve out a better life.

Students were impressed and inspired by the talent and message in the show. Some lucky people even got to meet the star actor by the stage door after the show! The show closes this weekend, so get there soon!

Addicted to your cell phone this Quad?

Hmmmm…..  If you have ever wondered if you should be considered addicted to your cell phone, we have a few short and funny signs that will definitely let you know whether or not you have a cell phone addiction.

The Signs of Addiction

  • Dreds! - If you are on your cell phone so much that you forget to wash your hair and end up with dread locks, there is a VERY good chance you are spending too much time with your phone.
  • Friends - If your only friends are those that follow you on Twitter or have poked you on Facebook, you may be addicted to social networks on your cell phone!
  • Sleep - If you sleep with your cell phone and wake up once or more during the night to check status updates or check-in on FourSquare when you hit the bedroom, you may be addicted to your cell.
  • Sister - If you forgot you have a sister because she is not “in network,” you may have a problem with your cell phone controlling your life.
  • Mobile Dreams- If your dreams seem like iPhone or Android apps – Angry Birds for instance – you may be spending too much time on your mobile phone.
  • Background & Ringtones- If your homescreen background changes more than twice per month or you are constantly trying out new ringtones – and have a special one for different people – you may be a bit addicted to your smart phone!
  • No Service- If your heart skips a beat or you start crying (or screaming) when you lose service to your cell phone, you might have a slight problem!
  • Checking Again- If you are constantly checking your phone or have buzzers and beeps set for emails, messages, calls and more, you may be addicted to setting up the features of your cell phone – which is a bit different but still dangerous.
  • Dinner Date – If you are checking your phone on a date or at dinner with your significant other, there is a very good chance you may have a problem with being addicted to your cell phone.
If you or someone you know is addicted to a cell phone, don’t despair… Mr. O has the cure :-)

Yorkdale @ Facebook

Yorkdale students enrolled in the business program were invited to Facebook for a ‘behind-the-scenes’ field trip at their Canadian Head office.  Students learned how businesses can use the site to launch promotional campaigns and how advertisers target facebook users by purchasing keywords  -  CPC, CPM, and CPA were just some of the words of the day.

Valuable lessons learned:

  • branding yourself
  • work hard
  • have a plan
  • yes/no
  • meritocracy
  • friends

We ‘Like’.

United Way Breakfast Fundraiser

What a great day for Yorkdale and the United Way!

Our Culinary Director, George, and his team, were extra busy this morning preparing the tasty food platters for our fundraiser.

EdVance Program Leader Jonathan Cox, was one of the many volunteer staff helping to serve our students.   “Once again, Yorkdale students went above and beyond to support a worthy cause.  Our students and staff will proudly donate nearly $1,100.00 to the United Way which is sure to benefit a lot of people during the holiday season’

“A gift in season is a double favor to the needy.”
