Welcome to EdVance Student Support

The guidance counselors here offer a wide range of support to our students.  As teachers and counselors, we understand the needs of our students both in and out of the classroom.  Some of our daily responsibilities include course option sheets, class changes, and most importantly, attendance issues.  We emphasize the importance of attending each class daily and on time.  Also, we work with students on college and apprenticeship applications and ensure they are making the right course choices for them and their preferred area of study.  When necessary, we also offer support for students who are applying for night school, summer school, dual credit, or e-learning courses.

One of our other exciting tasks is to assess and process Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) applications that students submit to us.  We determine whether students are eligible for these equivalency credits based on a number of factors in their past education and work/life experience.  Our students have greatly benefited from obtaining equivalency credits because they gain a sense of hope and accomplishment.  They realize that an Ontario Secondary School Diploma is within their grasp, and they see the possibility of post-secondary education or apprenticeships in their not too distant future.  Just ask an EdVance grad from Yorkdale and they will tell you how much they have gained through the PLAR application process!

Students may speak to our guidance counselors on a drop in basis about any of the above issues.  If they come to see us about a personal issue, we listen attentively and offer resources for outside support whenever necessary.  The well-being of our students is always our first priority.
