Description:
This course prepares students for secondary school English.
Course
Outline:
Oral
and Visual Communication:
Students
discuss a wide range of topics with accuracy necessary
for success in Academic subjects and in social situations.
Independently, or with a group, students present a topic
to the class based on a theme in literature. Students
examine how some of these themes are portrayed in the
media.
Reading:
Students read and respond to literature. Reading selections
include poetry, essays, short stories, a novel, and
a play. Students demonstrate an understanding of the
elements of a range of fiction and non-fiction forms
of writing. Elements include imagery, personification,
and figures of speech. Students examine how informational
texts present facts and ideas. Students can record information
in point form notes and fill in graphic organizers.
Writing:
Students write coherently on a range of academic topics
using forms such as the report and the essay. The essay
can be used to introduce, develop and conclude an argument.
Students write creatively using forms such as narratives
and poetry; they write a critical review of a book or
article. Editing with a checklist is encouraged, as
is peer editing.
The main grammar emphasized is sentence structure: use
of a variety of connecting words and phrases to express
logical relationships between and among ideas; use of
the infinitive and/or gerund, phrasal verbs and participial
phrases.
Social
and Cultural Competence:
Students discuss and analyze media coverage of a current
local national or global issue and present own views;
summarize information, compare perspective, express
an opinion, urge action. Students evaluate the effectiveness
of their own and peers’ reports, letters, or speeches
on current issues.

you will spend your time:
Class time will be a combination of teacher presentations,
class discussion, individual, pair and group work, and
presentations. Some reading outside of class is required. |
