What
You will Learn:
This course is designed to improve students’ accuracy
in using English in classroom situations, for personal
and career planning and to understand the changing world.
Students study and interpret a range of texts and produce
a variety of forms of writing. Activities help students
develop their oral presentation skills and acquire study
skills (including note-taking and summarizing skills)
that will enhance ability to learn in all subjects.
By
the end of this course, students should be able to:
Oral
and Visual Communication

Take part in conversations on a range of topics.

Use the pronunciation, stress, rhythm and intonation
patterns of spoken English with some accuracy.

Use some transition words and phrases to link ideas
(e.g., to show sequence, to compare and contrast).

Use common grammatical patterns with some accuracy:
subject verb agreement; consistent verb tenses; possessive
pronoun agreement with antecedents.
Reading
-
Skim text (paragraphs and whole passages) to find
the main idea.

Scan text to find specific information (examples,
details, sequence).

Demonstrate understanding of fiction and non-fiction
passages by retelling content/making a personal response/completing
a close.

Identify a writer’s or character’s point
of view.
-
Identify various story elements (character, plot,
setting).
-
Take notes from a passage using a graphic organizer,
in preparation for writing a summary.

Use context to infer the meaning of new words.
Writing
-
Spell vocabulary of everyday life and academic subjects
with considerable accuracy.

Use an outline with teacher assistance to develop
and organize ideas.

Write short expository paragraphs in response to reading
or on topics of personal interest.

Write a composition linking simple paragraphs about
a central idea, using common transition words.

Revise first drafts to clarify ideas, improve organization
and correct language errors as identified by the teacher.

Use a variety of simple, compound, and complex sentences
with some accuracy.

Use common tenses and verb phrases, adjectives, adverbs,
and conjunctions, prepositions interrogative and negative
constructions with considerable accuracy.
