Description:
This
course expands students’ essential English communication
skills and cultural knowledge and introduces the language
of classroom studies. Students will develop oral communication
skills and reading strategies, expand their vocabulary,
and use more complex sentence patterns in their speaking
and writing.
By
the end of this course, students should be able to:
Oral
and visual communication
-
Maintain face-to-face conversations on familiar topics.

Use the customary stress and intonation patterns of
English speech to emphasize meaning or express feeling.
-
Use short sentences and phrases to tell stories, recount
events, provide directions or instructions, and give
opinions.
-
Use common aspects of grammar appropriately and with
some consistency: verb tenses; adjectives; adverbs;
conjunctions; prepositions; common idioms; some two-word
verbs; some interrogatives; negative construction.
Reading
-
Skim a paragraph to find the main idea.
-
Scan text to find specific information (examples,
details).
-
Demonstrate understanding of fiction and non-fiction
passages by retelling content, making personal response,
completing a close.

Use a graphic organizer to record information from
a reading passage.

Use context to infer the meaning of new words.
Writing
-
Spell frequently used words with considerable accuracy.
-
Use capitals and periods with some consistency.
-
Respond to written questions in complete sentences.
-
Write a short composition following an outline given
by the teacher.

Write simple and compound sentences.
-
Use common tenses and verb phrases, adjectives, adverbs,
and some conjunctions in their writing.
Course
Outline:
Units
will be based on having students engage in the following:
-
Oral /visual activities: communicating orally individually,
in pairs, in groups, or to the whole class in presentations.
Students will participate in listening and comprehension
activities.

Reading: Students will choose a book for personal
reading and prepare a book report and /or presentation.
- Various
fiction and non-fiction texts will be studied in class.
-
Writing: Students will write in a variety of forms
such as notes, short journal entries narratives, letters,
responses, autobiographies, and short paragraphs.
Simple sentence patterns, adjectives, adverbs, some
conjunctions, verb phrases, and common tenses are
expected. Some elements of the writing process, especially
prewriting activities are emphasized.

Social/cultural: Themes in the course will emphasize
the wide variety of cultures and languages in Canada.
Students will learn facts about Canadian culture,
geography, and history. In addition, the 3 levels
of government, the electoral process, and political
parties in Canada will be reviewed.
