EPS3O, Presentation and Speaking Skills, Grade 11, Open, (1 credit)

Making Presentations

  • Make presentations in a variety of forms such as debates, speeches, announcements, panel discussions, recitations, interview, etc.(e.g., debate an issue, tell a story, role-play a job interview, present a monologue, make a multimedia presentation.)
  • Identify elements of style and organization in famous speeches such as those by Cicero, Martin Luther King, Jr., Marc Antony. Use effective language; vary volume, pitch, inflection, to maintain interest. Ask questions to check understanding; add humour to emphasize key points; respond to the unexpected e.g., questions during the presentation.
  • Use visual aids such as flip charts, posters, videos, tables, charts, graphs to clarify meaning; recorded music, computers slide presentation.

Responding To Presentations

  • Use techniques of effective listening to understand ideas and information e.g., make notes to record key points and organization during a speech; consider implications of the information.
  • Assess the effectiveness of a presenter’s arguments, and organization; use a graphic organizer to track the organization of the ideas in a presentation.
  • Assess the effectiveness of techniques used in oral presentations e.g., voice, gestures, visual aids used in a speech. Develop criteria.
  • Provide constructive feedback on presentations by peers.
  • Create a plan for improvement of oral communication skills. Identify the types of oral presentations most relevant to careers of interest.
