ELDDO, Literacy for School and Work, ELD Level 4, Open, (1 credit)

Oral/Visual

  • Participate in discussions and short oral presentations (e.g., by explaining, persuading, summarizing); ask for clarification, paraphrase, use appropriate gestures, etc.
  • Evaluate customer/employee interactions as presented in a video; role play an employee asking advice from a supervisor.
  • Listen to a variety of types of English; distinguish formal from informal English ( e.g., cafeteria conversation, office conversations, parent/student/teacher conferences); use appropriate style of language in role plays (e.g., introducing a new student to other classmates, participating in a job interview, making weekend plans with friends).
  • Evaluate points of view taken in a variety media works (e.g., newspaper articles, films, ads)
  • Describe the functions of different elements in newspapers (e.g., headlines, feature articles, editorials); identify strategies used in different media to influence audiences (e.g., celebrity endorsements, appeals to emotion)
  • Create a variety of media works (e.g., classroom newspapers, ads, radio documentaries)

Reading

  • Extract information from texts in a variety of subject areas; choose and respond to personal reading.
  • Expand vocabulary (e.g., use of prefixes and suffixes, infer meaning from context, identify parts of speech); use key elements of textbooks (tables of contents, indexes, boldface, italics).
  • Use reading strategies: prediction, adjusting speed of reading to suit the difficulty, recognize some cross cultural themes.
  • Skim and scan text to choose relevant materials; compare and evaluate ideas and info from more than one source; summarize main points (e.g., charts, tables).

Writing

  • Write for personal and career-related purposes (e.g., letters, newspaper ad, resumes, record ideas and feelings in a reading log; write book reviews); take notes using graphic organizers; link ideas using transitional words and phrases; fill out forms (e.g., job applications).
  • Prewriting (graphic organizers, written outlines), draft ,revise, and edit short compositions with items outlined on a checklist (e.g., subject-verb agreement, consistency of tenses, inclusion of transitional words and phrases). Use graphics to embellish.
  • Spell correctly most of the time.
  • Verb tenses, conditional form, subject/verb agreement, punctuation, sentence structure correct most of the time.

  • Identify and use the skills needed to see, assistance in the school and community.
  • Discuss the influence of the media (e.g., media selection of facts, images, and opinions related to race, gender and age.
  • Respond to issues in current events (e.g., through writing assignments, role plays).
  • Participate in a real or simulated job search search (e.g., tailor a resume, write a covering letter; make a telephone call to accompany a job application; prepare and participate in an interview).
