Description
Civics is intended to help students to understand the role of the citizen in a democratic society. It will help you to understand how democracy works at the local, national and global levels. In particular, the course will focus on issues relevant to Canadian society.

Course Outline

Unit 1: Democracy and Ideas

  • History of democracy
  • Characteristics of a democratic society

Unit 2: Democracy in Canada

  • Structure of Canadian government
  • Elections and citizen participation
  • Levels of government
  • Issues in Canadian society
  • Political parties and ideologies

Unit 3: Democracy: Global Perspectives

  • Global issues such as: Climate change, Globalization, Human Rights
  • The students get 0.5 credit after passing the course successfully.
How you will spend your time
Students will learn about democratic structures and current issues through reading, writing, group discussions and debates. The course includes guest speakers such as local politicians.
